For nearly a decade Michael Harrison Berg of Van Ghost was a behind the scenes type of guy. That all changed in 2007 when Berg’s close friends encouraged him to revisit the acoustic guitar he put down in his younger days and asked him to perform a song at their wedding. Melding the inspiration from the many talented bands he has worked with and his own passion for music, the singer returned to his roots. He began writing songs, drawing from his life experiences, creating a heartfelt and staggeringly honest perspective. Each class will explore the rhythm and movements that make up the breath of hoop dance. We will explore movement and expression through the hoop, understanding technique as well as spiritual form or formless. Utilizing the concept of being present and moving with the breath, we will move into the experience of the now is all there is, tuning inward, discovering the momentum of acceptance and empowerment through the sacred circle. The class will allow all levels within the hoop to push their boundaries, heal and explore transcenDANCE.
Step inside the hoop and explore inner movements. Tarapin and Sitara will be covering basic trick concepts and transistions as well as teacniques to incoroporate flow. By the end of each class, you can walk away with something new and be falling deeper into the discovery of your inner fluidity.
Alfred Darlington isn’t your average cookie-cutter musician. From how he looks (early Victorian Dandism), to how he makes music, to how he expresses himself and views the world, his is a very individual, a ‘bespoke’ outlook. Alfred was born in Santa Monica in 1977 to an artist mother and psychologist father.
Musical from very early on, as a child he was classically and jazz-trained in a number of instruments, but his interests were broad and varied – less a prodigy than a renaissance boy whose obsessions ranged from Greek legend to the mountains of Wales. As a 15 year old he finally persuaded his parents to take him to the Principality. Whilst in a YMCA in London he flipped the radio dial, found a pirate radio station and taped some UK rave and hardcore. “It was my first ‘Eureka!’ moment in music,” he says. Back in the US he joined local rock bands, jazz bands and ska bands, which he enjoyed but felt limited by too.
The Big Damn Band is very much a family affair, with the good reverend on finger-style resonator guitar and lead vocals, his wife “Washboard” Breezy Peyton on washboard and vocals, and distant cousin Aaron “Cuz” Persinger on drums and bucket. The band’s home base is deep in the hills of Southern Indiana’s Brown County, which boasts a population of 14,957. (Or 14,954 when the band’s out on the road playing close to 250 gigs a year, including appearances at the Austin City Limits festival and tours with Flogging Molly, Derek Trucks, and Clutch.)

“Antifogmatic” is a bit of bygone slang that mandolinist Chris Thile and his bandmates stumbled across, “an old term,” explains the Punch Brothers founder, “for a bracing beverage, rum or whiskey, that one would have in the morning before going out to work in rough weather, to stave off any ill effects.” It’s an apt title for the Punch Brothers’ second Nonesuch disc. This ten-song set of collectively written material takes a clear-eyed view of those things less tangible than booze that can make us woozy: the pleasures and pitfalls of romance, the seemingly limitless possibilities and multifarious temptations of life in the big city.

San Francisco-based band Tea Leaf Green got their start in the relationship formed between guitarist Josh Clark and drummer Scott Rager, who played in a high-school band together in Arcadia, CA. After graduation, Rager enrolled at San Francisco State College, where he met bassist Ben Chambers. When Clark moved to San Francisco, the three began playing together as a trio. Their first paying gig was attended by Trevor Garrod, a singer/songwriter and keyboard player who had moved to San Francisco looking for other musicians to play with. Garrod met the three others, and soon they were playing together as a quartet. They built a following in Northern California and self-released the albums Tea Leaf Green, Midnight on the Reservoir (2001), Live at Slim’s, San Francisco CA (2003), Living in Between (2004), and Live at the Independent (2004).
The swelling beats of a non-stop dance party and the soaring guitar and melodic triumphs of a cathartic rock experience – equal elements to the live instrumental dance rock of LOTUS. Sending huge crowds into a sweat-drenched euphoria at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Ultra, Rothbury, Nocturnal, All Good and Nateva, the band has become a sought after late-night act. And word has spread as Lotus has packed the country’s finest clubs and theaters during their busy touring schedule.
The album Hammerstrike and the two follow-up EPs, Oil on Glass/Feather on Wood, show the multiple sides of Lotus. Slow-building guitar driven compositions complimented by music leaning toward harder beats and electronic textures working together to form a cohesive whole. Always pushing forward, the band has been writing, performing and recording new music throughout the year developing new sounds and expanding their unique musical voice.
Cirrus Minor is a Psychedelic Rock band whose music twists and turns through numerous genres. Their original material runs the gamut from funk to rock, reggae to disco, and blues to jazz. Live shows also incorporate significant amounts of improvisation, custom tailoring each performance to best fit the vibe of the event, as well as occasional interpretations of songs from various artists.
The creative and diverse songwriting of Cirrus Minor has gotten them invited to share bills with jammers (Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler, etc…), experimental psychedelic acts (Primus, Zappa Plays Zappa, etc…), and rockers (Green Jello, Nashville Pussy, etc…), winning over every audience. 2010 saw Cirrus Minor touring festivals and venues in 5 states (including Wakarusa, Harvest Fest, dates with Primus and Wookiefoot, etc…), and 2011 is shaping up to be bigger and better, with the release of their full-length album, return appearances at many of the fests they played in ’10, plus a new lineup that promises to add new musical possibilities and enhance what was already a critically acclaimed live show.
In early 2008, Cirrus Minor was formed as a 3 piece band by Aaron Lea (bassist), Mackenzie Fleener (drummer), and Mike Ruby (guitarist/singer), becoming a 4-piece with the addition of keyboardist Rich Cantrell shortly after their first show. The band recorded a 5 song demo, 2009’s “Awaiting Dilation”, which sold out of its initial (and only) pressing at the CD release show, and then was put online for free and downloaded over 1,500 times. In the fall of 2008, CIRRUSMINORLIVE.COM was launched to allow fans to get a free recording of any of their live concerts, since each show is unique; whether they are looking to preserve the memory of a show they were at, or to catch one they missed. After 2 years of regional touring, Cirrus Minor recently expanded to a 6 piece band, with the addition of drummer Joe Corbin (who had worked with Aaron in various metal bands for almost a decade) and guitar virtuoso Donnie Steele (who was an original member of Slipknot), with Mackenzie moving to auxiliary percussion and samples to accommodate the expansion.

Each class will explore the rhythm and movements that make up the breath of hoop dance. Utilizing the concept of being present and moving with the breath, we will move into the experience of the now is all there is, tuning inward, discovering the momentum of acceptance and empowerment through the sacred circle. A staggered exodus in 2005 brought all six musicians to Los Angeles, where they met at Hollywood’s famous Hotel Café where vocalist/guitarist Tim Jones served as the venue’s talent booker. First performing together during casual late night jam sessions, they quickly discovered their chemistry was undeniable. It was on that very stage that Truth & Salvage Co. was born. The different paths that led each of them to this point engendered a remarkable range of sounds and styles. Their palette stretches from rock to country to alternative.
San Francisco-based rock band Big Light first emerged in 2007 as a vehicle for aspiring singer/songwriter/guitarist Fred Torphy to get his songs into the world. The band would spend the next three years honing their sound and performing around the West Coast relentlessly. Now hailed as one of the fiercest young rock bands on the Bay Area scene with a growing national buzz, Big Light is poised to release its debut full-length album, Animals In Bloom, through reapandsow on March 2.
As the story goes, Torphy was inspired by his generation’s current wave of great American rock groups like My Morning Jacket, The Slip, Dr. Dog and Wilco. Joining forces with drummer Bradly Bifulco, they set out to form a band that would follow in those footsteps. “We love to experiment and keep things as weird and interesting as possible, but it all needs to come back to serve the song,” says Torphy.

Two Fresh consists of twin brothers Sherwyn and Kendrick Nicholls and is accompanied live by drummer Colby Buckler. The twins have been making music since their freshman year of high school. In early December 2008 they added Colby on drums for the live setting. Collectively, they keep the whole place moving with a sound that fuses hip-hop and jazz with the intensity of uniquely styled live drums.
Two Fresh has come along way since grasping their sound. In October of 2009 the duo released their first EP “Baker’s Dozen” on 1320 records. In January of 2010 they started LabCoat, a collective of artists out of Asheville, North Carolina, including Jables and Bookworm, who began experimenting with the use of collaborations in an effort to push the boundaries of all musical aspects.
It seems that every Celtic band is on tour in North America during the six to eight weeks that lead up to St. Patrick’s Day. Outside of hometown Chicago, they may be best known for high profile and excellent remixes of Daft Punk, Neon Indian, Black Moth Super Rainbow and DFA 1979. Back home they are justly celebrated for legendary performances such as their set at last summer’s Wicker Park Fest that turned the entire neighborhood into a vast and energized dance floor, forcing even the palest and most resolutely hard-to-impress hipsters to call up their inner dance masters. Live performances combine loops, samples and Mickey Kellerman’s keyboards with Darren Heitz’s drums plus Felix Moreno’s Larry Graham-style bass slapping to create an enormously powerful groove. Their light show is as good as their music, and their set have been known to inspire dance frenzies.

Oliver and Chris Wood grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Sons of a Poet and a Microbiologist, they both took up music. Oliver moved to Atlanta and became a southerner. Chris moved to New York City and became a Yankee. Now, after years of musical and geographical separation they have reunited.
While in Atlanta, Oliver soaked up the roots of blues, the soul of the south, and found he had a talent for writing and singing songs. His band, King Johnson (named after Freddy King and Robert Johnson) toured mostly in the southern states. Meanwhile, Chris was living in Manhattan playing everything from free jazz to rock and roll. This is where he met his band mates to form Medeski Martin & Wood.

Since then, America's prison population has become the largest in the world and over 1.6million arrests for drug offenses are made each year - half of those arrests being for marijuana. It’s also become a war on music lovers. The Rave Act continues to target the electronic music scene and festivals like Camp Zoe have been shut down. Students for Sensible Drug Policy will host a discussion to inform participants about all aspects of the drug war, alternatives to current policies, and how you can get involved. The Giving Tree Band is an American indie folk-rock group started in 2004. It was started by brothers Todd and Eric Fink, whose father played piano and exposed them to The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Kinks, and other rock bands during their childhood. The brothers played together and with family members, developing a taste for songwriting. After their college years, the brothers wished to hone their music theory and technique skills, and in 2001, they formed a jam band called Stone Samadhi, whose sound Eric described as “high energy, really weird jazz stuff”.

The New Mastersounds are a four-piece band based in Leeds, England, whose modern take on vintage soul-jazz, funk and rock draws influences from Jimmies McGriff, Smith, and Hendrix, as well as their most closely-associated mentors, The Meters. BÉLA FLECK is often considered the premiere banjo player in the world. A New York City native (named after composer Béla Bartok), he picked up the banjo at age 15 after being awed by the bluegrass playing of Flatt & Scruggs. He began experimenting with playing bebop on the banjo in high school. In 1982, he joined the progressive bluegrass band New Grass Revival, where he made a name for himself in the country-bluegrass world. At the same time he was releasing a series of solo albums for Rounder Records. In 1989 he formed the Flecktones. They made their self-titled debut recording in 1990 by playing a “blu-bop” mix of jazz and bluegrass and soon became a commercially successful, critically-acclaimed and award-winning band.

This youthful approach to music is mirrored by the youthfulness of the band. In their early twenties, the band seeks to grow musically together through the progression of their music. Their fresh take on instrumentation, song composition, and life inspires audiences and fans to join in the party and share in the music. As much immersed in the jam community as fans, the group continuously works to build the jam community and support live music. Since their inception in 2005, Trichome has branched out to make a heavy dent on the already phenomenal Colorado music scene. With unique lyrics from lead singer Evan Daldegan, the driving bass lines of Dave Frediani, the piercing guitar lines from Matt Newhard, the powerful presence of Mike Windham on tenor sax and keyboards, and the hefty bari sax growl from Leah Concialdi, it makes for an explosive front line. Add in the passion of Matt Schooley on percussion and Jeff Dejohn on the drums and there is a full sound that is nothing less than transcendental.
Trichome has already gained the attention and acclaim of many by supporting major acts such as Groundation, The Original Wailers, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Culture, Midnite, and Eek-a-Mouse. Oliver and Chris Wood grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Sons of a Poet and a Microbiologist, they both took up music. Oliver moved to Atlanta and became a southerner. Chris moved to New York City and became a Yankee. Now, after years of musical and geographical separation they have reunited.
While in Atlanta, Oliver soaked up the roots of blues, the soul of the south, and found he had a talent for writing and singing songs. His band, King Johnson (named after Freddy King and Robert Johnson) toured mostly in the southern states. Meanwhile, Chris was living in Manhattan playing everything from free jazz to rock and roll. This is where he met his band mates to form Medeski Martin & Wood.
Originally from a small town in Central IL, Chicago Farmer has now become a large part of the Midwest’s above and underground folk n’ roots scene. Performing nearly 150 shows a year at clubs, concert halls, festivals, honky tonks, cafe’s, living rooms and barns, his music has reached folks from all walks of life. Since forming in Atlanta over a decade ago, instrumental electronic rock band STS9 has experienced a meteoric rise to the forefront of the electronic-rock music scene. Recently ranked #25 among Pollstar’s list of top-grossing touring acts for Summer 2010, STS9 averaged more than 4,200 tickets sold per city on a 25 city tour that boasted opening acts such as Ghostland Observatory, Thievery Corporation and Big Boi of Outkast. The band’s tour culminated with two sold out performances at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, with 18,000 fans on-hand to experience the audio-visual force that is STS9.
